How to Live with your Body after Pregnancy

I’m losing hair by the bundle, my stomach is juicy and loose, and my thighs are thicker. I did not even mention how I have battle scars and lines in places I’ve never seen before. But this is postpartum. This is my new mom body. Life after pregnancy ushers in an entire new way of being–emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Nonetheless, in this post I’ll share with you how to live with your body after pregnancy.

Live– verb| 1. spend one’s life in a particular way or under particular circumstances. 2. have an exciting or fulfilling life.

Testimony:

I enjoyed my pregnancy through and through. I was so committed to enjoying the last trimester, I did nothing but prepare for the baby, eat what I wanted on the couch, and bask in the last few moments of my pregnancy. But that’s not to say, I was not a frantic mess when it came to preventing the inevitable postpartum, after pregnancy, changes.

I went hard. I used the big bottle of Bio Oil to prevent stretch marks, and I did not have any until the last few weeks of my pregnancy. Convinced I was beating the odds, I wore a bra to sleep every night because I read wearing bras such as sports bras, keep your breast firm even after pregnancy. Then, I brought a postpartum girdle. I was ready for my body to return back to its pre-baby form in no time while shouting from the mountain tops, #thesnapbackwillbetelevised. I was not playing. But, nobody–not my son, not my God–nobody cared about any of my after pregnancy goals. At the end of the experience, by body took new shape, as I too became a new woman regardless of what I did to prevent it.

Let’s get real. You are birthing a human being. A little baby person will live rent free in a pregnant woman’s body eating, growing and kicking for 9 months. There’s no way in heaven the body won’t change due to the phenomenon that is taking place. The only thing there is to do is learn to live with the changes. Before you become a Katt Williams bit,

consider the tips below:

1. Embrace the new curves. I for one feel like a new woman with a new attitude. These new hips and this new boobatry of mine is nothing to play with. Sure I have more juice than I did before, but I make it look sexy.

2. Remember the blessing. Children are a blessing. (Psalm 127: 3-5)The fact mothers were chosen to carry forth such a miraculous task is also a gift. In its true essence, the ability to bring life into the world is a superpower. Mommies have the superpower of shape shifting.With that, when you start to miss your old body, remember your old body couldn’t perform the miracle you just did.

3. Love the Shell. Remember the body is the temple that houses the spirit. Previously lived in by a baby human or otherwise, the body deserves to be loved and nurtured. With that said, continue to love the new shell in the same manner in which you have in the past. Treat it with healthy foods, exercise, hot baths, rest, and plenty of self-care.

In Summary:

Look at the sweet child you helped make. You did that, sis. Your body was able to give that baby the smile it uses the brighten your day, the bright eyes that twinkle at the sight of you, the little hands that are eager to grab, and the giggle that can warm even the coldest heart. In truth, you are a new woman–a mother. It’s only right your new role earns you an even more amazing outfit.
